Today I am hosting Luisa, shop owner of LittleGemsbyLuisa on Etsy. Here is my interview.
1. How did your start your business? What motivated you to open your Etsy shop?
“I started my business by making myself a customized bracelet. I think that I never hit puberty. I have very dainty features! I was wearing one of my designs at work one day and colleagues wanted to have one too. A few months later I started selling so much I was able to save enough to pay for our wedding reception. Several years later, and two kids later, I finally took the plunge in to Etsy. I wanted to do something I loved that generated revenue and allowed me the flexibility to be at home with the kids.”
2. Which item in your shop is your favorite? Why?
“That’s a hard one! I am into my bohemian phase right now. I love all long wooden necklaces and my leather bracelets too.”
3. When did you learn your craft?
“I started knitting with my mother at around 8. I’ve been beading for over a decade now.”
4. Is there anything else you would like to share?
“Don’t try to please everyone. There is a reason why people like your creations, you made them. Learn about social media, take excellent pictures and don’t expect over night success. Measure achievement by where you were yesterday, last year and compare it to the present.”
Many times I wish my whole crafts time could be dedicated to enjoy thinking about wedding decoration ideas, and making them! My niece is getting married and I was looking for a handmade gift for her big day! I came across some beautiful, simple, delicate ideas from one of the florists she may be hiring. This sparked many wonderful thoughts for my shop and inspired me to start thinking about the gift for my niece. I would definitely love to make handmade decor for napkins. I started working on the napkin ring in the picture and combining it with matching crochet napkin embellishments. I am not so sure about using beige, so I will go to my craft shop and get some delicate metallic lace and try to work the crochet embellishment with it instead.
I will share with you in a future post how it all went. Her wedding is next year, so thankfully I do have time to perfect my idea and to get it done. 🙂

Making this teething necklace took me back to when my kids were babies. I wish I would have had this idea then. Moms wear this today while they hold their babies in their arms. Mom can carry a conversation while the baby is busy teething using these wooden covered balls in the necklace.
I made the one in the image here using organza thread because it is soft and easy to handle. I stayed away from using any kind of clasp for the safety of the baby. Mom can simply tie a knot when wearing it.
It was so exciting to be able to make it and carry an option in my shop that can potentially help those nursing Moms out there. This is an item that can keep the baby happily busy while Mom can have some room to finish a chore at home, or enjoy the company of a friend. This item is made with 100% cotton yarn which covers the wooden balls completely. The crochet work also covers the necklace thread.
Warning: As always, never leave your baby unattended. Always stay close to your baby while using this and any other product.

I hope I left something more for your creative crochet mind to enjoy! 🙂
